Hello MLTC Members,

ML Eight years ago, the MLTC took a quantum leap forward when we bubbled over the courts at West and then just one year later took over the building that is now MLTC East.  It was during that time that I needed to bring someone on board who I felt could take a sizeable portion of my responsibilities - particularly those with the more advanced players - so that I could focus on growing the organization externally.  It’s a little tricky when your name is on the building and many of the clients have been used to having lessons with you for years, but John Hattersley was the right person at the right time.  Although players/parents may now see him as a top-tier coach with an eye for technique, only other coaches in the area knew of his prowess back then and it took some time for players/parents to realize what a gem he was/is.

In looking for his replacement there was quite a bit of interest, but only two outsiders made the cut.  In both instances it did not work out for reasons which tells me that it was a blessing.  What we have at the MLTC is a very unique formula for success where we have cultivated a top junior player in the 12U, 14U and 16U all at the same time and for someone to come from outside and step into the MLTC system may not be such an easy transition.  Therefore, I will be stepping back in to assume the lead role of managing the JTP/Masters program for 2021/2022.  I have been overseeing a seasonal tennis club out in Cambridge for the past 18 months and thankfully the time frames for these two programs do not overlap.

headshot Additionally, fortune has smiled on us such that we have the benefit of another gem that only a handful of you know of.  For quite some time, Frank Butera has worked with small groups and private lessons in the mornings at the MLTC, but I have tried for years to get him to come aboard in the afternoons during the indoor season and this will be the year that it finally happens.  Frank is a master technician in the same vein as John.  For those of you who trust John’s guidance, Frank was on John’s short list of known pros who he felt would be the right match to help move the program forward.  The fact that Frank now has the availability to work with the JTP/Masters program and the DBH teams is nothing less than perfect planetary alignment.

We may yet bring one more new pro onto the scene, but if we do, it will be the right fit and they will be indoctrinated into the MLTC system of success.

Although John’s presence will be missed, I am excited at the prospects moving forward and will look forward to seeing many of you soon!
